Δυο – νομίζω – καλοκαίρια πριν, η Ελίνα Σταματάτου άφηνε την Αθήνα για να εγκατασταθεί με τις δυο κόρες της στο εξοχικό της οικογένειάς της στην Αίγινα. Και σε μια συνάντηση που είχαμε τότε, μίλησε για το σχέδιό της – να γράψει δυο παραμύθια για τη μαγεία και την ομορφιά της ζωής όπου πρωταγωνίστριες-αφηγήτριες θα ήταν στο πρώτο η μικρή της κόρη, η Κατερίνα, και στο δεύτερο η μεγάλη, η Hώς. Το σχέδιο έγινε πραγματικότητα, το πρώτο τουλάχιστον παραμύθι για την μαγεία και την ομορφιά της ζωής, με πρωταγωνίστρια – αφηγήτρια τη μικρή Κατερίνα, κυκλοφορεί, από τον παγκόσμιας εμβέλειας εκδοτικό οίκο Amazon, σε αγγλική μετάφραση της Δανάης Σήμαν κι επιμέλεια του Γιάννη Ντούρου. Η μοναδική εικονογράφηση είναι της Λυδίας Βενιέρη. Η προσπάθεια έχει πάρει ως τώρα δυο διεθνείς κολακευτικές κριτικές, τις οποίες και παραθέτουμε για τους αγγλομαθείς. Το Πρώτο Μυστικό της Ελίνας ελπίζουμε ότι θα κυκλοφορήσει γρήγορα και στη μητρική του γλώσσα, τα ελληνικά, γιατί είναι μια τρυφερή, όμορφη ιστορία για το πώς πλέκεται η ζωή με μυρωδιές και χάδια κι αγαπημένα ζώα και γεύσεις κι αστέρια στα μάτια ενός παιδιού, σαν αυτό που όλοι κρύβουμε μέσα μας.

In The First Secret: A Magic Recipe, Elina Stamatatou offers a spiritual, contemplative take on the classic cooking metaphor.
The story is narrated by Katerina, a five-year-old girl who lives with her sister, Ios. One day, the girls bake a cake with their mother, and the simple experience gradually transcends into a feeling of pure happiness and tranquility.
The First Secret is an emotional book. It is not tragic, but it is also not solely about good things happening to the characters. Rather, Stamatatou compels the reader to examine his or her own life in the same way Katerina does, as a means to find the happiness within.
The illustrations, by Lydia Venieri, are rendered with heavy and powerful blacks that lend substantial depth and weight.
The story is both expansive and grounded in realism. As a collaboration of text and art, it attempts to set a tone and move the reader into a contemplative state of mind. From this place, even younger readers will be able to step back and look at the big picture, allowing for a space that lets them truly appreciate their families, friends, and the simple joys of a good day.
